Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 72, legislation that will provide California residents with strong new protections against surprise out-of-network medical bills starting July 2017.
The measure mandates that patients who receive care from in-network facilities will have to pay only in-network cost sharing. This change will impact only non-emergency care, since emergency physicians in California are already barred from balance billing patients.
